Extended-Care Rehab A big part of Arbor Health–Morton Hospital’s operation is the patient category we have dubbed “Extended-Care Rehab,” which is known in medical circles as “skilled nursing” or even “swingbed.” While the term “skilled nursing” is understandable, the “swingbed” title brings images of hammocks to most minds. However, the “swing” portion of the title refers to the ability of moving patients from one classification to another, such as from inpatient care to skilled nursing. No matter what the title, this service line of patient care is an important part of our operation and an important part of our continued profitability. It was previously up to one person, our case manager, to facilitate the patients’ admittance and discharge as well as reaching out to discharging hospitals to recruit their patients to our facility rather than being transferred to a nursing home. In 2024, we created a case management team by joining two lone roles into a two-person team: Case Manager Jennifer Neely, RN, and Utilization Review Specialist Michelle EastmanHolmes. Together, they have successfully increased patient transfers from other hospitals. Departments grow to meet patient needs Wound Care Clinic Our lone wound care nurse, Kathy Battrick, CWCN, RN, was joined by Cindy Potts, RN, increasing our ability to care for patients. The two work together in both the outpatient clinic and with the inpatient and extendedcare rehab (skilled nursing) departments. The clinic side is open an additional day per week for increased patient access. On the hospital side, the wound care nurses are more available to assist nursing staff with patient care and also have more time for staff education. 6 MYARBORHEALTH.ORG
